WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID?

Mental Health First Aid is a 12-hour award-winning training program designed to educate individuals on how to help someone in a mental health crisis.  This program has proven to increase knowledge, reduce stigma and most importantly increase supportive actions.  It even improves the mental health of first-aiders.  It does not teach people to be therapists, rather it teaches how to recognize the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to go about guiding a person to appropriate professional help.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • The signs and symptoms of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, psychosis and addiction
  • How to approach someone in a mental health crisis
  • How to be supportive, diffuse the situation and encourage professional help
  • What to do if someone is suicidal, harming themselves or refuses help

HOW YOU WILL BENEFIT:

Participants will engage in experiential activities that build understanding of the impact of the illness and teach how to assess, listen, give reassurance and encourage self-help strategies.  At the completion of the course, participants will be certified in Mental Health First Aid.
